Staff management is how HR contributes to the achievement of the company’s business objectives. It used to be linear and predictable: going through CV’s, the interviewing process, onboarding and continuous training. Core HR processes and practices promoted “human capital”: the company’s most important “asset”, or so it was often said. Then everything changed in the last two years. Keep reading and find out how.

Staff management is for human beings, not human capital

Performance management would be a better term for what HRM used to be like. Employee satisfaction was less important than productivity and alignment with the company’s mission, culture and stated goals. The task of HR was goal setting, performance review and a performance improvement process. This was really workforce planning with performance management assessment instruments addressing shortcomings and the quality of the workforce within the pay-for-performance compensation process.

Since 2020, these conventional HR roles have been derailing because of instability and volatility in every area of corporate life. COVID-19 variants, brought remote work. The employers dreamt that employees will come back to the office. That HR will again follow process philosophies which they are comfortable with. The employees, on the other hand, discovered that working from home actually raised their productivity. Allowing them full integration of professional and personal life and achieving greater quality of life.

That led to the great resignation, and the Millennial generation discovering its value in a sellers -market for labor. That caused right off the bat recruiting agonies for HR departments, along with the need for radical redirection of staff management in the face of an astonishingly transformed workforce seeking a very different work experience.

The new human resources management puts employees at the center of each decision.

Sesame HR

Formerly, HR’s job was to align a new hire with the workplace and its culture, values, mission and way of doing things. Now the roles are reversed. It’s the company that had better attend to aligning itself with employee needs –or lose them when competition is fierce and they are most needed.

Meet the unmanageable new employee

Organizations are forced to focus on people, and to accept a generational change. That means HR has got to get its act together and be really creative about how to attract, keep and manage talent. The guard rails of success nowadays go outwards, not upwards, so the lure of promotion and a career with a quality firm no longer excites Generation Z.

But among the graduates of our universities, the percentage who master technology or business is low. They are much in demand, feeling their strength and making demands that the conventional pay and benefit cannot possibly meet, if it alone is the lure. Mind you, productivity is not an issue. Many recent studies have shown that employees who work remotely or on a hybrid basis are just as productive as those who drive to work, and are very happy with working from home.

New employee management for the new employee

The burden on HR will increase, but also its new opportunities. Unexpected changes in the workforce require new ways of staff management. That is where technology comes in to simplify all the processes involved in human resource management.
