Activity-based team building works by presenting the team members with challenges that they have to complete together. This type of team building teaches people to work together and to trust one another. It also gets people out of their comfort zone when they are faced with an activity that they have never done before.
Activity-based team building can consist of either physical or intellectual activities. A physical activity is a great choice if you have a young and active group. The most common physical activities for team building are games like kart races, laser tag or paintball. While physical activities are very effective at promoting your team’s competitiveness. On the other hand, intellectual activities are more fitted to bring out the strategists hidden in them. Problem-solving activities like “Escape the room” challenges are perfect to improve you team’s working dynamic.
If you feel like you team should work on improving a particular skill, then this is the type of activity you need. Indeed, there are activities that are specifically designed to teach skills such as leadership, conflict management and negotiation. With those activities, you can get rid of a problematic lack of skill and thus increase productivity. However, bear in mind that skill-based team building requires contracting a professional and can prove itself more expensive than activity-based team building.
Value-based team building consists in all team members participating together in a charitable activity. This type of activity provides an opportunity for everyone to show their teammates the best sides of their character. Working together to give back to the community is a particularly memorable experiences to share with your team members. And not only will it strengthen the bonds within your team, but it will also increase employee engagement. Indeed, employees are more likely to care about a company that includes human values in its policy and acts on them. Value-based activities include, for instance, helping a local shelter, or running a food drive and donating the profits to a charity of your choice.
Sometimes, all you need to improve working relationships is to spend some time with your colleagues in a relaxed environment. This is why taking your team to a restaurant or a bar can be an excellent idea. This type of team building activity doesn’t focus on developing a particular skill, but simply provides an occasion for your team members to engage in casual conversation and get to know each other better. Team bonding is easy to organize and a relatively inexpensive way to reinforce the bonds within your team, so don’t hesitate to use it to get the best out of your team members.
